LADY BIRD JOHNSON, wife of former US President Lyndon Johnson, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2007, aged 94. Born on December 22, 1912, in Karnack, Texas, she was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson Taylor and Minnie Patillo Taylor. She was, by all accounts, a woman of great drive and intelligence. Lady Bird married Lyndon B. Johnson in 1934 and established herself as an influential political figure as First Lady of Texas during her husband's governorship of that state from 1949 to 1963, and of course, as First Lady of the United States during the Johnson White House years, from 1963 to 1969. During her time at the White House, Lady Bird worked diligently to improve the environment, founding the First Lady's Committee for a More Beautiful Capital in 1965 and creating the first national conservation program, the Highway Beautification Act of 1965. After leaving the White House, Lady Bird and her husband continued to travel and take part in many charitable and educational efforts over the years. She conducted her own successful business ventures, and in 1988 was appointed to the Board of Regents, University of Texas System. Lady Bird Johnson will be remembered for her tremendous tenacity and passion for life, as well as her many accomplishments as a devoted wife, proud mother, and influential woman. She is survived by her two daughters and numerous grandchildren.
