Lenny Bruce (Leonard Alfred Schneider), 1940-1966, died August 3, 1966 at the age of 40. Lenny was a controversial stand-up comedian and social critic whose material included obscenity, satire, and political commentary. He gained fame for his style of pushing the boundaries of what was considered socially acceptable in the 1950s. His comedic style is noted for its clever exploration of social issues and was ahead of its time. He first gained national attention in 1959 and soon found himself the figurehead of the rising counterculture movement in the 1960s. His growing fame was accompanied by numerous arrests on obscenity-related charges, leading to numerous trials. In 1964, he was convicted for obscenity and sentenced to four months in prison. Lenny Bruce was an influential figure in stand-up comedy whose legacy will live on in the current generation of comedians. He will be remembered for his groundbreaking style of edgy comedy which pushed the boundaries of social conventions and paved the way for future stand-up comedians.
