Lillian Gish, a legendary figure within the entertainment industry, passed away at the age of 99 on February 27, 1993. She began her career in 1908, when she was just five years old, and gained multiple Academy Award, Golden Globe and Emmy nominations throughout her career. Although she is best known for the silent films she starred in from 1912-1928 such as D.W. Griffith’s The Birth of a Nation and Intolerance, she was also a successful theater actress, appearing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in international productions. Lillian Gish’s career longevity was astounding, appearing in films well into her late eighties and on television shows such as Little House on the Prairie and The Dollmaker. In addition to her acting credits, she was also a respected director, author, and civil rights activist. Her legacy will be remembered for generations to come, as her versatile acting rubbed off on budding actors everywhere. She was an unforgettable figure whose influence was far-reaching; her place in history is secured.
