Ludwig II, King of Bavaria, died on June 13, 1886, at the age of 60. Ludwig II was born in Nymphenburg, Bavaria, on August 25, 1845, the son of King Maximilian II and Marie of Prussia. He ascended to the throne during the Franco-Prussian War in March 1864. Although his reign was overshadowed by the war, he championed strong cultural and social causes, establishing an ambitious infrastructure of roads, schools, and cultural institutions. He was also well-known for his eccentric lifestyle, constructing opulent castles and monuments including Linderhof Palace, Herrenchiemsee, and Neuschwanstein Castle. During his final years, Ludwig II’s mental health began to deteriorate, preventing him from fulfilling his duties as king. He was declared medically and mentally unfit to rule, and his reign was terminated in 1886. It remains uncertain how Ludwig II died, though a rumored drowning is the accepted version of events. Throughout his life, Ludwig II left a lasting impression on Bavaria and beyond. He was remembered for his substantial contributions to the country’s architecture, culture, and infrastructure, and continues to be revered as one of Bavaria’s most celebrated and beloved historical figures.
