Maria Augusta Kutschera von Trapp, also known as 'The Sound of Music's Maria von Trapp, passed away on 28th March 1987 at the age of 82. Maria was born on 26th January 1905 in Vienna, Austria and grew up in the city in the age of the Austro-Hungarian Empire before the World War I. She was the daughter of a naval officer and would eventually become a famous Austrian singer and actor. Maria was most widely known for being the stepmother of the Trapp Family Singers and oldest daughter of Baron von Trapp. Her musical family, and her romantic relationship with Georg von Trapp, was famously chronicled in the 1959 book 'The Story of the Trapp Family Singers' by Maria von Trapp and later they were portrayed in the 1967 musical film The Sound of Music. In 1941, the von Trapp Family emigrated to the United States, where Maria found success in her musical career. She performed with her stepchildren throughout the United States and Canada, touring for several years and eventually retiring in 1967. Maria also wrote and published two books about her family and life, 'The Story of the Trapp Family Singers' and 'Maria: My Own Story'. Maria spent her final years living in Morrisville, Vermont. She was buried next to her beloved husband in Stowe, Vermont at the Trapp Family Lodge she and her husband had built together. She left behind her loving family, who will miss her dearly.
