Merlin Olsen, an American professional football player, sportscaster, and actor, passed away on March 11th, 2010. He was 69 years old. Olsen began his professional football career in 1962 when he was selected by the Los Angeles Rams as the third overall pick in the NFL draft. During his 15-year career, Olsen played in 14 Pro Bowls and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1982. Following his retirement from professional football in 1976, Olsen became a successful sportscaster, working primarily for NBC and ABC Sports. His work earned him 10 Emmy awards. Olsen also established a successful career as an actor, best known for his role as Jonathan Garvey in the television series Little House on the Prairie and his role in the miniseries Roots.
