Former British Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, passed away on November 9, 1940 at the age of 71 in his home in Heckfield, near Reading in Berkshire. Chamberlain was born on March 18, 1869, in Edgbaston, Birmingham. He started his career in politics at the age of 49 in 1918 when he was elected Member of Parliament for Birmingham Ladywood, and he was later elected mayor of Birmingham. In Lord Stanley Baldwin's Conservative government Chamberlain served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1924 until 1929. From 1937 to 1940, Chamberlain served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. During his time in office, he was a signatory to the Munich Agreement of 1938, which aimed to appease Nazi Germany by granting the German annexation of the Sudetenland. Following World War II, Chamberlain's legacy was marred by his infamous appeasement policy. Chamberlain was a devoted public servant and a loving husband to his wife, Anne. He was predeceased by her in 1937. He is survived by his son, the former Prime Minister, Sir Austin Chamberlain, and his daughter, Mrs. Cynthia Colville.
