On March 15, 1938, Nikolai Bukharin, a prominent Soviet political figure, passed away at the age of 49. Born in 1888 in Moscow, he became a prominent member of the Bolshevik Party in his early twenties. Bukharin was an advocate of Stalinist industrialization policies, and successfully led campaigns to increase productivity and economic growth. He was instrumental in the incorporation of Georgian and Armenian lands into the Soviet Union, and was the editor of the newspaper Pravda for eight years. In 1935, he was removed from his position in the Politburo and throughout the next three years, Bukharin was accused of ‘anti-Soviet activities’. After a trial in March, 1938, he was found guilty of treason, espionage and sabotage and was sentenced to death. Shortly afterwards, he passed away. Bukharin leaves behind a legacy of economic and political policy accomplishments in the Soviet Union.
