After training at the College of Art and Technology in Middlesbrough and the Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama in Kent, he spent much of his early career working as a television news reporter, a presenter for various variety programs and a singer. He became a household name in the late 1970s when he began hosting "The Paul Daniels Magic Show" on the BBC, which ran for over 15 years. The show was an immense success and Daniels was regarded as an exemplary English entertainer, bringing magic and laughter to millions of homes across Britain.
