Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, died on 9 February 2002 at the age of 71. The younger sister of Queen Elizabeth II, the Princess was born on 21 August 1930 in Glamis Castle, Scotland. Her Majesty's dedicated public service included involvement with more than 300 charities. Her royal engagements beyond Britain included landmark visits to Russia in 1956 and to the Bahamas, Jamaica and Tonga in 1985. She was president or patron of numerous organizations including St. John Ambulance, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, Age Concern, and the Botanical Society of the British Isles. To honour the late Princess, book of condolence registers opened around the United Kingdom and messages of sympathy poured in from all parts of the Commonwealth. The Princess is widely remembered as an adored public figure whose presence at events around the nation was well respected. Her spirit of dedication, kindness, and enthusiasm for her work will be remembered fondly.
