On September 24, 1950, Princess Victoria, Marchioness of Milford Haven, passed away peacefully at her home at the age of 87 years old. The daughter of Prince Louis of Battenberg, she was born the Princess Victoria of Hesse and was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria. Princess Victoria married her cousin, Grand Duke Louis IV of Hesse in 1884, and in the following year she gave birth to Princess Alice, the mother of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. In 1905, the family moved to England and the Grand Duke Louis was created Marquess of Milford Haven. Despite her royal heritage, Princess Victoria enjoyed a long life of quiet and non-public service, dedicating her time to philanthropic ventures. She played an active role in the support of many charities and causes and her work was recognized by organizations in Britain, Germany and Russia. Her memory will be remembered for her kindness and selflessness, and for the many years of giving back to her community and those in need. Princess Victoria is survived by her daughter, four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
