Robert A. Durst, a real estate heir from a prominent family in New York City, passed away on January 10th, 2022 at the age of 78. Robert leaves behind a noteworthy business career established by his grandfather, Joseph Durst, who created vast real estate holdings, including buildings in Manhattan’s Empire State district. Robert’s father, Seymour, was a major force in the Durst Organization and named Robert as a board member in 1972. Robert was later appointed president in 1994. Robert graduated from the Wharton School of Business in 1965. After college, Durst worked as a Parole Officer in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He briefly returned to New York to assist in the family’s business ventures, becoming CEO of City Investing Company in 1976. Robert went back to Iowa before returning to the Durst Organization. Robert Durst’s life was complicated over the years and he was involved in various and often publicized legal struggles. Despite his struggles, however, Durst left an indelible mark on the business landscapes in New York City and Iowa. His legacy will be remembered. May he rest in peace.
