On July 6, 2009, Robert S. McNamara passed away at the age of 93. McNamara was born on June 9, 1916 in San Francisco, and spent his early life in the Bay Area, ultimately graduating from UC Berkeley and Harvard Business School. He served as the 8th Secretary of Defense from 1961 to 1968 under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson and was one of the officials involved during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Upon leaving the Pentagon, McNamara joined the World Bank and served as its president from 1968 to 1981, making him the longest-serving president in the bank's history. He is remembered as an advocate for poverty reduction and a leader in international development. In later life, McNamara engaged in several projects to promote world peace and understanding. In 1995, he co-published "Argument Without End," a book about his experiences during the Vietnam War. Lockheed Martin also recognized his leadership in the development of its advanced aircraft. McNamara is survived by his wife Margaret and by his three children and seven grandchildren. He will be remembered as an influential and dedicated public servant.
