On Wednesday, October 2, 1985, actor Rock Hudson, best known for his leading roles in some of the most acclaimed films of the 1950s and 1960s, died at age 59. Hudson was born in Winnetka, Ill. on November 17, 1925, to Roy and Katherine Hudson. He began his career as a telephone operator and encouragement from a friend eventually led him to pursue a career as an actor in the late 1940s. After private lessons and studying at the Actors Studio, Hudson made his big screen debut in the 1952 film "Scarlet Angel." Hudson went on to become a beloved star of film, television, and theater. His most recognized film roles include an adaptation of Edna Ferber's novel "Giant" (1956), "Magnificent Obsession" (1954), and "All That Heaven Allows" (1955). On the small screen, Hudson starred in the comedy "McMillan & Wife" and romantic drama "Dynasty." In 1977, he became the first major star in Hollywood to participate in a made-for-television movie. In addition to his work in Hollywood, Hudson wrote his heartfelt and inspiring journey in his memoir "Rock Hudson: An Autobiography." Hudson's apparent and abrupt death garnered much attention, with many believing he had succumbed to acute lung illness. On July 25, 1985, shortly before his death, he issued a statement confirming he was suffering from AIDS. He is survived by his siblings, many nieces, nephews, and a legacy of films that have continued to be widely appreciated to this day.
