Darren McGavin, a beloved actor of stage, television, and film, passed away on February 25, 2006 at the age of 83. McGavin was born in Spokane, WA in 1922 and began his career in theater in Southern California. From there, his career spiraled to Broadway and well beyond. His best known roles were Mike Hammer in the 1950s television series "Mike Hammer," and Ralphie's father, "The Old Man," in the 1983 classic film "A Christmas Story." He also starred in the television shows "Kolchak: The Night Stalker," "Riverboat," and "The Outsider." His films include "The Natural," with Robert Redford, "Billy Jack," and "The Good Guys and the Bad Guys." McGavin is remembered by many as one of Hollywood's true character actors, always delivering a powerful performance, no matter the size of the role. He was much loved and respected by his peers and fans alike. McGavin is survived by his four children.
