Ruby Dee, an actress, poet, playwright, and civil rights activist, died peacefully in her home on June 11, 2014 at the age of 91. Born Ruby Ann Wallace in Cleveland, Ohio on October 27, 1922, she attended Hunter College and graduated with honors in 1945. She made her Broadway debut a year later, in Jeb, and soon after gained recognition for her starring role in the film "The Jackie Robinson Story". She appeared in a variety of films, television shows, and theatre productions, and is best known for her appearances in films such as "A Raisin in the Sun" and "Edge of the City". Throughout her career, she won numerous awards, including a Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award, the Screen Actors Guild's highest honor. In addition to her acting accomplishments, Dee was a renowned civil rights activist. She and her husband, Ossie Davis, had a successful playwriting and acting partnership, and were often seen at civil rights events alongside figures such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. She is survived by her children Guy, Nora, and Hasna.
