On January 18, 2011, at 95 years old, Sargent Shriver passed away. He was born on November 9, 1915 in Westminster, Maryland. Sargent was a Navy veteran, Attorney General of the United States, founder of the Peace Corps, and the first director of the Office of Economic Opportunity. During his lifetime, he worked to ease social and economic inequity in the United States. As a civil rights leader, he championed numerous political efforts, including the 1965 Voting Rights Act, and served as ambassador to France, from 1968 to 1970. Sargent Shriver will be remembered for his strong commitment to public service, and his lifetime of fighting to lift up those most in need.
