Satyendra Nath Bose passed away on February 4th, 1974 at the age of 80. Widely recognized as a physicist and mathematician, his contributions crystallized a major shift in scientific paradigm and established his place in the pantheon of Indian science. Dr. Bose was born on January 1st, 1894 in Calcutta, India. After completing his PhD in physical sciences at Cambridge University in 1921, he became a professor of Physics at the University of Dhaka. He is best remembered for his pioneering work in developing the ‘Boson Theory’, one of the main theories underpinning modern particle physics. This work had far-reaching consequences in the then-emerging field of quantum mechanics and helped bring the sub-atomic world into sharper focus. He also received the Padma Vibhushan in 1954 and was later awarded the Lenin Peace Prize in 1962. Dr. Bose’s life and legacy carry a lasting impact on science worldwide and his works continue to inspire generations of students and researchers. May he rest in peace.
