Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, one of the great leaders of modern Kashmir, passed away on November 8, 1982 at the age of 76. Sheikh was born on December 5, 1905 in Srinagar and educated at the Islamia School (later Agricultural College). After graduating, he joined the Muslim nationalist group Muslim Conference (later renamed National Conference), and became its leader in 1938. Through Muhammad Abdullah's leadership, the National Conference was responsible for ushering in a new era in the history of Jammu and Kashmir by making a substantial contribution to the cause of fundamental rights of the people of the state. He became the first Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir in 1948 and was at the helm of state affairs. Under his leadership, the first assembly elections in the state were held in 1951. He was instrumental in implementing far-reaching reforms in the state, including the reorganization of the state into 14 districts, the land reforms of 1950, the improvement of public schools and colleges, and the establishment of Srinagar University. His death on November 8, 1982 was met with great sadness. He left behind a lasting legacy and will long be remembered by those he served throughout his life.
