On August 15, 1975, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a renowned statesman and the first President of Bangladesh, passed away at the age of 55. Born in 1920, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is remembered for leading the Bengali-speaking people of then East Pakistan in a fight for greater autonomy. His vision for a secular and democratic nation, epitomized in his Six Point Program, gained widespread acclaim. In 1970, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman became the first Prime Minister of East Pakistan, where he fought to ensure a fair resolution of the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. As the first President of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman served for a brief three years, from 1972-1975. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's legacy as the founding father of Bangladesh has been celebrated by many. He is survived by his three daughters – Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana, and Sheikh Saleha – and will be remembered for the lasting impact of his contributions to the country he helped to create.
