Thomas Emmet "Tom" Hayden, a longtime civil rights, anti-war, and environmental activist, passed away on October 23, 2016 at the age of 76. He was born in 1939 in Detroit, Michigan, and graduated from the University of Michigan Law School before moving to California in 1962. As one of the primary authors of the Port Huron Statement, a manifesto organized by the Students for a Democratic Society, Hayden helped bring issues such as labor reform and civil rights to the forefront of American politics. He also co-founded the Peace and Freedom Party and was a prominent anti-war activist during the Vietnam War. Off the streets and into politics, Hayden became one of California's most influential legislators, serving for 18 years in the state Assembly and Senate. Most notably, he championed social justice and environmental causes in the Legislature, including a 1970s statewide referendum to limit air pollution. He argued for water conservation, and criticized the federal government's plan to build a high-speed railway line between Los Angeles and San Diego because it would destroy two important wetlands. Hayden is survived by his wife, actress and author Barbara Williams; their son Liam; his son from a previous marriage, Troy Garity; and his daughter, Mary.

Death: something like birth, a natural mystery, elements that split and recombine. Not an embarrassing thing. Not an offense to reason, or our nature. Marcus Aurelius
