Udham Singh (1900-1940) passed away on July 31, 1940, at the age of 40. Udham Singh was born in British India and was a revolutionary nationalist who sought to liberate India from colonial rule. Singh was orphaned as a child and suffered great hardships, inspiring him to dedicate his life to the fight for Indian independence. In 1919, Singh participated in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre protest and was soon after arrested and incarcerated for his involvement. Upon his release in 1921, Singh left India for England with the aim to take revenge against those responsible for the massacre. In 1940, Singh entered a debate in No. 10 Downing Street in London and coldly assassinated Michael O'Dwyer, the former lieutenant governor of the Punjab province during the massacre. Singh was soon after arrested and charged with murder. He was eventually found guilty and was hanged to death in the Pentonville prison. Udham Singh was a passionate freedom fighter and national hero for Indian independence, and his efforts and sacrifice will forever be remembered and celebrated.
