Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, an influential leader in India's struggle for independence and a strong voice for women's rights, passed away on December 1, 1990 at the age of 90. Born in India in 1900, Pandit received her degree at Oxford University, studied in England at the London School of Economics, and then returned to India where she served in various positions in the Indian National Congress. She was first elected to the Central Legislative Assembly in 1926 and was later elected to the Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh in 1937 and 1946. Pandit served as the Indian ambassador to the Soviet Union (1947-49), the United States (1949-1951), and Ireland (1954-61). She was also the first woman to serve as the President of the United Nations General Assembly (1953-54). From 1962 to 1967, she was the Governor of Maharashtra, and she also served as the Ambassador to Nepal for a short period of time in 1975. During her lifetime, Pandit had an impact that extended beyond India's independence. Her advocacy for women’s rights earned her recognition from the Indian Government. She was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1992 for her service to the country, posthumously. Her successes continue to be commemorated today with the Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit Award, which recognizes excellence in foreign service. She is survived by a son and two daughters.
