Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India, passed away on October 31, 1984 at the age of 66. Gandhi served as Prime Minister of India from 1966 to 1977 and from 1980 to 1984. Throughout her tenure, she sought to shape India into a modern and prosperous nation, as well as an influential leader on the world stage. Gandhi is credited with bringing in a “Green Revolution” in India which modernized the nation’s agricultural industry and with playing a major role in ending the Bangladesh War of Independence in 1971. Gandhi, the only female Prime Minister in Indian history, was revered by many of her country's citizens and is remembered as one of India’s most prominent and influential leaders of the 20th century. She is survived by her sons Rajiv and Sanjay Gandhi, her daughter-in-law Sonia Gandhi, and her two grandchildren, Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi.
