On January 30th, 1948, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi died at 78 years old. Gandhi, known to many as 'Mahatma' meaning 'great soul', was born in India in 1869. He attended college in England during the late 1880s, and upon his return to India devoted his life to combating injustice and fighting for independence. Gandhi's struggles in India were characterized by peaceful civil disobedience, which he used as a means of nonviolent resistance to oppression. His work helped India win its independence, and his teachings and actions have served to inspire countless leaders around the world. Gandhi will be remembered as one of the most influential advocates for change in the fields of civil rights, non-violence and the universal struggle against oppression.
