Feroze Gandhi, a prominent Indian statesman and Member of Parliament, passed away on 8th September 1960, at the age of 47. A long-time advocate of civil rights and a major figure in the Indian independence movement, Gandhi earned a law degree in 1926 and opened his own practice in Uttar Pradesh. He married Indira Nehru, the future Prime Minister of India, in 1942. Gandhi worked tirelessly for the people of India, expanding power to the villages and improving public accountability of officials through the Backward Classes Commission and a no-confidence movement in the Indian Parliament. He was a leader of the Indian National Congress and the United Progressive Alliance, as well as founder of the Hindu Mahasabha. Throughout the 1950s he held various positions including President of the All India Congress and President of the Constitution Assembly, in which he worked closely with other leaders to draft the Indian Constitution. He was also a key figure in the passage of the States Reorganization Bill and the Hindu Code Bill. Gandhi left an unforgettable and immense legacy of dedication to India and its people. His incredible intellectual contributions to the formation of India’s modern state will live on in the hearts of many.
