Sanjay Gandhi, born December 14, 1946, passed away on June 23, 1980, at the age of 33. Sanjay Gandhi was a major figure in Indian politics and was a prominent member of the Nehru-Gandhi household. He served as an MP and was the President of the Indian National Congress (Indira) from 1978 to 1983. Sanjay partook in many activities and initiatives including acting as the convener of the youth wing of the Indian National Congress, establishing Maruti Udyog, a major Indian automobile company, and the constructions of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. He attracted considerable controversy while leading the slum clearances in Delhi, and the introduction of 20-point population control program. Sanjay Gandhi is survived by his widow Maneka Gandhi, and his son Varun Gandhi. Sanjay Gandhi will be deeply missed and many will remember him as a powerful political force in India.
