It is with sadness that we announce the death of Yakov Dzhugashvili, who passed away at the age of 36 on April 14, 1943. Yakov was born on March 17, 1907 in the city of Gori, Georgia, near the Caucasus Mountains. Yakov was the eldest son of Georgian revolutionaries Joseph Stalin and Ekaterina Geladze; Yakov was their only surviving child. He had one brother, Jacob, who tragically died in infancy. Yakov attended several military academies in his lifetime, and was an active participant in the battles against Nazi Germany in World War II. He achieved the rank of major in the Red Army. Yakov was a devoted husband to Yulia Meltzer and father to his two sons, Grigory and Yevgeny. Yakov will be remembered for his courage and loyalty to the Soviet Union during a tumultuous time in history. He selflessly gave his life in the service of his country. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and countrymen.
