Yuri Andropov, a significant figure in the former Soviet Union, died at 69 years old on February 9, 1984. Andropov served in various positions within the Soviet Union during his lifetime, including Chairman of the KGB, and as the sixth General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. He held this office from November 1982 until his death. His leadership style had earned him the nickname "The Iron Man of Communism". Under his tenure, the Soviet Union was intensely focused on strengthening internal security and rooting out dissidents. He also sought to expand economic ties with the West and introduce reforms. But his objectives of reform were largely unsuccessful, as discussions with Western leaders at the 1983 Geneva Summit failed to bring about significant change in the Soviet Union. Andropov's legacy will continue to linger for years to come.
