Alec Douglas-Home, a British politician who served as Prime Minister for a short tenure during the 1960s, died on October 9, 1995, at 92 years old. Over the course of his life, he also served as Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, as well as Leader of the Opposition in the House of Lords. As Prime Minister, Alec Douglas-Home held a Conservative majority but lacking a strong mandate. After a 16-month tenure, he resigned in 1964, making Harold Wilson the new head of the Labour party. Born in 1903 as the Earl of Home, Alec Douglas-Home was the grandson of the 14th Earl of Home and an elder brother of the 15th Earl. He held several Lordships over his lifetime, and became a Director of the Bank of England in 1941. In 1965, Alec Douglas-Home departed from the House of Lords to pursue a career in the House of Commons as a member of Parliament for Kinross and West Perthshire. He was renowned for his diplomatic approach to public life, as well his sense of humour. As a leader of the Conservative party, he believed in a conciliatory style of governance rather than a confrontational one. Alec Douglas-Home is survived by his three children, fourteen grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
