Charles Curtis (1860-1936) passed away on February 8th, 1936 at the age of 76. Curtis was a native of Topeka, Kansas, born to Ellen Curtis. He was the first person from a Native American ancestry to serve as Vice President of the United States, and was selected as President Herbert Hoover's running mate in 1928. Prior to that, Curtis served the United States in Supreme Court of Kansas (1892-1895), in the US House of Representatives (1893-1907), and as US Senator (1907-1913). He also worked in business, owning a significant portion of the Lyric Theater in Kansas City. Curtis was a noted supporter of civil rights, and lived his life in the spirit of his stepparents' Kiowa tribe. Outside of his political career, Curtis was involved in a variety of hobbies, including billiards, fishing, golfing, playing bridge, and oil painting. His commitment to the Republican Party and his country were unwavering in his lifetime. Charles Curtis positively impacted the lives of many throughout his lifetime, and will be remembered for his tenacity and independent spirit.
