Eartha Kitt, beloved and world-renowned singer, dancer, actress, and performer, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2008, at the age of 81. Eartha Mae Kitt was born in North, South Carolina, on January 17, 1927. She is best remembered in the entertainment industry for her signature performance of the 1953 hit Christmas song “Santa Baby”, which made her known internationally as a performer and symbol of Christmas cheer and spirit. Ms. Kitt was also a successful Broadway performer, starring in shows such as New Faces of 1952 and Shinbone Alley, as well as a recognizable voice actress who lent her famous voice to the characters Yzma in Disney’s The Emperor’s New Groove and Catwoman in the original Batman TV series. On top of her acting and singing accomplishments, she was also a successful activist and advocate for civil rights for African Americans, Native Americans, and women. Ms. Kitt is survived by her two children, Kitty and Ted Harley, whom she raised as a single mother, as well as her three grandchildren. Her last public performance was in 2007 at Manhattan’s Café Carlyle, where she sang “C’est Si Bon.” With her energy, enthusiasm, and power, Eartha was truly an unforgettable icon in the entertainment industry whose legacy will continue to live through her many esteemed performances and memorable characters.
