Eugene Landy, a prominent psychologist who gained notoriety for his unorthodox and intense methods of treatment, died on March 22, 2006, at age 71. Born in 1934 in New Haven, Connecticut, Landy earned a doctorate from the University of Miami in 1961 and began using his intense methods to treat troubled celebrities. His most famous patient, Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, gained and lost a considerable amount of weight as well as having severe mental problems under his care. Landy's unreliable and expensive methods of therapy, in which he charged up to $20,000 per week, ultimately resulted in an intervention led by the California Board of Medical Quality Assurance in 1983. He ultimately lost his clinical license and agreed to never again treat Wilson. Landy continued to practice in other states, and had a run-in with the law in 1993 when he was arrested in Louisiana and charged with six counts of practicing psychology without a license. Landy had remained retired since the late-80s and was survived by his wife, Joan Landy, whom he married in 1976.
