James Callaghan (1912-2005) passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on March 26th, 2005. James was born on March 27th, 1912 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, to James and Charlotte Callaghan. He worked as a bus driver prior to enlisting in the Royal Navy during World War II, where he earned a General Service Medal and several naval awards. After his military service, he returned to politics and began a long, successful career in public service. In 1945, he was elected to the House of Commons as a Labour Member of Parliament for the Cardiff South constituency. During Labour's time in office from 1964 to 1979, Callaghan rose swiftly through the ranks and held various senior offices including Home Secretary, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Foreign Secretary and Prime Minister from 1976 to 1979. Throughout his distinguished career, he was a leading campaigner for national and international peace and for improved race, gender and class relations. In 1983, he was made a life peer and Baron Callaghan of Cardiff, and he served in the House of Lords until his death. His legacy lives on in the form of his four children, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. James will be remembered fondly and missed deeply by all who knew and loved him.
