Lionel Barrymore, one of Hollywood’s earliest icons, passed away on November 15, 1954 at the age of 76. One of three children of stage and film actors Maurice and Georgie Drew Barrimore, Lionel was born Lionel Blythe in Philadelphia in 1878. After graduating from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, he made his Broadway debut in the 1901 production of Sister Mary. From there, his acting career skyrocketed. He made his film debut in 1908, going on to star in such classics as It’s a Wonderful Life, Captain January, The Red House, and many more. He is perhaps best remembered for his Academy Award-winning performance as Mr. Potter in It's a Wonderful Life (1947). Barrymore was nominated for five Academy Awards and was also a part of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He was married five times, and had no children. His passing marks the end of a legendary career that spanned nearly half a century. He will forever be remembered and cherished for the memories he provided and the films he left behind.
