Mary Quant, fashion icon and businesswoman, passed away Wednesday 2023-04-13 at the age of 93. Quant began her career in the 1950s designing revolutionary styles of clothing for the influential London boutique Bazaar. Her designs—such as her innovations of miniskirts, pantsuits, and her iconic colorful, androgynous aesthetic—gave young people of the time the freedom of expression through their clothes and became a staple in popular culture. Quant’s influence also extended into the business world, where she wrote a definitive book on marketing and retail lessons for aspiring fashionistas, as well as creating two lines of makeup and fragrances, and opening a store dedicated to teaching children how to sew. Her legacy is felt today in the continuing influence of her designs, and her influence on the fashion industry, particularly within the youth-driven streetwear scene.
