Family and friends today mourn the passing of the Grand Duchess Mary of Teck, née Princess Mary of Teck, who died peacefully at Kensington Palace, London, England, on March 24th, 1953. Born at Kensington Palace, London, England, on 26 May 1867, she was the daughter of Francis, Duke of Teck and Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge. Mary was best known for her marriage to King George V, which helped to stabilise the monarchy in the United Kingdom. She served as Queen Consort from 1910 until the death of King George V in 1936, at which point their eldest son Edward VIII succeeded his father. Mary stayed on in support until his abdication in late 1936, and she was also a source of comfort throughout the royal family's momentous transition to the reign of King George VI. Mary maintained a hardworking regal role throughout her life, and worked as patron of over 200 charities. She was also an active supporter of her adopted home country, including the campaign to grant women the right to vote in 1918 and the British effort in World War II. For the remainder her life, Mary was heavily involved in local charities and spent her time tending to horticulture and hobby farming on her estate at Frogmore House. Survived by her 4 children (George VI, Mary, The Princess Royal, Henry, Duke of Gloucester); grandchildren (Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester); and great-grandchildren, Mary will be fondly remembered for her grace, courage, and service to the Crown.
