Ottis Toole (1947-1996), died on September 15, 1996, at the age of 49. Born as the eldest of five children in Jacksonville, Florida, Toole developed a fascination for fire at a young age, committing several associated juvenile offenses. As an adult, this fascination transitioned into a pattern of murder and violence throughout the states of Florida, Georgia, and Louisiana. He was convicted and served time for arson, auto theft, and fraud in the 1970s. In the 1980s, Toole confessed to an accessory role in the murder of Adam Walsh, the six-year-old son of John Walsh, host of the television program America's Most Wanted. Due to the lack of physical evidence, the case was dropped. Toole went on to confess to involvement in at least six other murders, as well as other non-lethal but gruesome crimes including cannibalism. Toole will be remembered for his lifelong struggle with mental illness and addiction. He died peacefully after a long illness.
