Sherman Hemsley, beloved actor, passed away on July 24, 2012 at the age of 74. Hemsley's career spanned almost four decades, beginning in the early 1970s. He is best remembered for his iconic portrayal of George Jefferson on the groundbreaking television series The Jeffersons, which aired from 1975-1985. He also costarred as Deacon Ernest Frye on Amen from 1986-1991. Hemsley was a beloved figure in television and film and his work will not be forgotten. In addition to his career in the entertainment industry, Hemsley was also involved in numerous philanthropic initiatives and was a passionate advocate for minority rights. Hemsley is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Ethel Hemsley. He is survived by his sons, Sherman Hemsley Jr. and Jonathan Eliot, as well as many other relatives and friends.
