It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Sushma Swaraj, former Minister of External Affairs of India, on August 6th, 2019, at 67 years old. Sushma Swaraj was born on February 14th, 1952 in Ambala Cantonment, Haryana. She is the daughter of Hardev Sharma, the late Shri Laxmi Devi, an eminent Punjabi educationist, and worked as a Lawyer and a Politician. Her illustrious political career was marked with many highlights. Through the 1970s and 1980s, she served in many different capacities in local and state governments. In 1977, she was elected the Education Minister of Haryana at the age of 25. In the following years, she served as theMinister of Home, Health, and Labor. She went on to become a member of the BJP National Executive, and she was later elected as Chief Minister of Delhi from October 13th, 1998 to December 3rd, 1998. In 1999, she became the first female to be appointed as a Union Cabinet Minister of India. In 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appointed her as the Minister of External Affairs for the next 5-years. While in office, Sushma made the ambitious Foreign Service Diplomacy closer to the common Indians by responding personally to their multiple requests made through social media. A few days prior to her passing, she was selected for the “Outstanding Parliamentarian Award” for 2010. Sushma leaves behind a legacy of dedication and public service that will be remembered for years to come.
