We mourn the passing of Will Rogers, pioneering comedian, actor, author, and cowboy, who died on August 15, 1935 at the age of 55. Born in Indian Territory in 1879, Rogers was a natural entertainer. He dropped out of school to pursue a career in the Wild West Show, and became a champion rope spinner and a natural comedy stylist. He went on to become one of the highest-paid celebrities in the country, performing on Broadway, vaudeville and even appearing in Hollywood films such as “State Fair” and “In Old Oklahoma”. He also wrote a syndicated newspaper column, which featured wit, satire and Americanism. Will Rogers possessed a rare talent for connecting with people through humor and his down-to-earth personality. His life was filled with many triumphs and accomplishments, including serving as the host of the Academy Awards in 1934. He will be remembered as a beloved icon whose humor and wisdom will never be forgotten.
