Dadasaheb Phalke, pioneer of Indian cinema, died on February 16, 1944 at the age of 73. He is remembered most prominently for producing the first full-length Indian feature film, Raja Harishchandra, in 1913. Much of his life had been dedicated to attempting to revitalize Indian art and to bring public attention to Indian culture. Phalke began his career in photography at the age of 19, where he worked at the University of London's IndianIJournal. As his career progressed, he began filming documentaries and slowly gained enthusiasm for the concept of producing Indian feature films. He founded Phalke Films and Hindustan Films, which paved the way for Indian cinema and its spread throughout the country. Dadasaheb Phalke left an important legacy in the world of Indian cinema, inspiring generations of filmmakers who followed in his footsteps to continue to create unique works of art.
