George Martin (1926-2016), known in the music world as the "Fifth Beatle," passed away in the early morning of March 8, 2016, at the age of 90. He was born in London, England, and had a long and prolific career as a record producer, composer, arranger, and audio engineer. Martin was revered for achieving a skillful balance between the commercial successes of the Beatles and pushing the boundaries of musical innovation. He produced and co-wrote almost all of the songs on the Beatles records, and helped shape the sound of the group using revolutionary and influential production techniques. Throughout a six-decade career, Martin mentored, wrote, recorded, and produced recordings for an array of influential artists, from Cilla Black to Jeff Beck, and had an unparalled impact on contemporary popular music. He received the Grammy Trustees Award in 1998, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999, and won three Academy Awards for music for the compositions used in The Beatles' films. George Martin is survived by his wife and four children.
