Girish Karnad passed away on Wednesday, June 26th, 2019, at the age of 81. Girish was a renowned playwright, actor, and filmmaker. He was an iconic figure in the world of Indian art and literature, and a prominent figure in Indian theatre. He wrote several acclaimed plays in both English and Kannada, and was known for his works tackling social and political issues. His plays included Tughlaq, Hayavadana, and Vidurashwatha. He also wrote several novels, short stories, and screenplays. As an actor, he appeared on stage, in films, and on television. He is best known for his roles in Shyam Benegal’s movies such as Nishant, Manthan, and Swami. He won numerous awards for his acting, writing, and direction, including the Padma Shri in 1974 and the Padma Bhushan in 1992. Girish was a powerful advocate for freedom of expression, and adhered to progressive ideals and progressive literature. He was also well-versed in religions, and was active in promoting interfaith understanding. His legacy will live on through his works and through the many lives he has touched.
