Jane Russell, 89, actress and sex symbol of the 1940s and 1950s, died on February 28, 2011, surrounded by her family. Russell was born in 1921 in Bemidji, Minnesota, and began her career as a model. She caught the eye of director Howard Hughes, who cast her in the 1941 film The Outlaw. Russell's voluptuous figure and sultry on-screen presence made her one of the most popular actresses of her era. She starred in such films as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The French Line, and Pal Joey. Russell was also one of the first celebrities to openly discuss her struggles with alcoholism and bipolar disorder. She is survived by her four children and six grandchildren.
