On January 18, 1955, Saadat Hasan Manto passed away at the age of 42. He was a prominent South Asian Urdu writing author who wrote 22 collections of short stories, one novel, five collections of radio plays, three collections of essays, and two collections of personal sketches. Manto’s works are known for their strong identification with the harsh realities and social and moral predicaments of his times. His style is direct and incorporates with subtle irony. During his life, he achieved several accolades, including being nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1951 and 1952. Although Manto’s writing career of over two decades was filled with controversy, his works are now looked upon as masterpieces. He championed the cause of human rights and exposed the hypocrisy of South Asian societies. His works have made an indelible mark on literature and remain an inspiration to readers everywhere.
