We regret to inform you of the passing of Albert King, a legendary blues musician and pioneer of the electric guitar, on December 21, 1992 at the age of 69. Albert King—born Albert Nelson—was born on April 25, 1923 in Indianola, Mississippi. A musical prodigy, he proved himself a talented musician at an early age and started his music career as a gospel singer, guitarist, and songwriter as part of the Five Stars of Gospel. King later entered the world of blues and developed a style of playing influenced by blues and jazz guitarists such as T-Bone Walker. In the 1960s, King released a collection of albums on Stax Records that cemented his status as a master of blues guitar. These albums—including King of the Blues Guitar, Born Under a Bad Sign, The Blues Don't Change, and I'll Play the Blues For You—have earned classic status among blues enthusiasts. King was known for his solid electric guitar sound, which often used extended chords, and firm driving rhythms. He also developed his own style of performance, characterized by strong vibrato, soulful vocal quality, and masterful string bends. Albert King won numerous awards throughout his career, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Blues Foundation in 1987, and a Grammy Award in 1990 for Best Traditional Blues Recording. The musical legacy of Albert King will live on in the hearts and minds of generations of blues fans. He will be remembered as one of the greatest guitarists and bluesmen of all time.
